This week's post will be much shorter than my normal weekly posts, as I have been wrapped up in ROTC work all week and have not had the time to do much research.
All I have been able to research so far on Gus Henderson is that he was the publisher for the Winter Park Advocate, Winter Park's first newspaper. Henderson also functioned as the reporter, editor, and salesman of the newspaper. What made him so interesting is that it was incredibly unusual for a white community to have a newspaper owned by a black man at the time. He also worked incredibly hard to increase the registered black voters in the region, before Jim Crow laws would penalize such actions.
Before next week's blog post, I intend research more about Hannibal Square, the black community of Winter Park as well as more about Gus Henderson's early life and where he came from.
