Week 11: Greenwood Cemetery Trip

Writer's picture: W. Grayson GarnerW. Grayson Garner

Hello everyone! This week's post will be quite short as I leave Wednesday morning for my ROTC Field Training Exercise. I will be going to Fort Moore, Georgia until this Sunday to practice shooting, land navigation and tactical skills.

This past Friday my Graduate mentor Sarah and I took a trip to Greenwood Cemetery to find the headstones of the people we are currently writing about. Here are a few pictures:

The cemetery is absolutely beautiful and learning about each section is fascinating. For instance, the black and poor plots used to be in the very back of the cemetery before its original entrance was moved and there was a great uproar as the new entrance was located by the black plot. Similarly, there was great outrage when the statue of 'Johnny Reb' was moved from in front of the courthouse to the cemetery in the mid-twentieth century. I highly suggest visiting and taking time to learn about Orlando's diverse history.
